Why Rest Matters as Much as Hard Work(Labor Day Edition)

Running a business means there’s always something to do - client work, emails, payroll, planning, problem-solving. It can feel like the to-do list never ends. And if you’re like me, it’s tempting to just push through, thinking that more hours = more results.

But here’s the truth I’ve learned: burnout doesn’t build businesses, balance does.

This Labor Day, I’m reminded of how important it is not just to value the work we do, but to value the rest that makes it possible.

I’m so grateful for my team. They show up every day for our clients - keeping books clean, solving tricky accounting problems, and supporting business owners behind the scenes. But I never want “showing up” to mean “working nonstop.” Their ability to deliver comes from being able to step away, take a breath, and enjoy life outside of spreadsheets.

That’s why I encourage them to take breaks, use time off, and truly disconnect on days like Labor Day. Because when my team rests, they come back sharper, more creative, and more energized. And honestly? That’s what I want for every business owner we work with, too.

So here’s my reminder to you and to myself:

  • Hard work builds momentum.

  • Rest keeps it sustainable.

This holiday, I’ll be logging off and encouraging my team to do the same. The numbers will still be there when we come back. And chances are, we’ll return with the clarity and focus needed to serve our clients even better.

Here’s to balance - because businesses thrive when the people behind them do, too.
